SUMMARY:SWC Research @TusnadEcoBear 2024
DESCRIPTION:A species conservation simulation system based on knowledge graph for brown bear movement prediction\nPresenter: Albin Ahmeti\nTime: Oct 22nd\, 13:35 \nSpecies conservation\, particularly for the brown bear\, presents significant challenges. These challenges are typically addressed at local or regional levels through best practices aimed at minimizing human-wildlife conflicts\, such as the installation of fences or the removal of problematic bears. In this talk\, we model the potential location of identified bears using a knowledge-driven approach based on Knowledge Graphs (KGs). KGs offer a rich data structure that integrates\, connects\, and harmonizes diverse and disparate data sources\, in a way that enables semantic understanding and logical reasoning capabilities. \nAs part of the Nature FIRST research project\, we have developed the Nature First KG\, a knowledge graph designed to support biodiversity conservation by linking data on species\, habitats\, and Natura 2000 sites. Additionally\, the KG connects ecosystem basemaps produced within the Nature FIRST—map layers that encode information on habitats\, elevation\, slope\, and other ecological or environmental factors—alongside the Brown Bear Habitat Suitability Index\, a weighting scheme that evaluates habitat suitability based on these features. Therefore\, the information about the distribution of factors as well as the preference of the bear on the factors is contained in the Nature First KG. \nUsing this infrastructure\, we have built simulations to predict brown bear trajectories. The simulation is based on generating a large number of random points and tracking their future trajectories. The simulation is probabilistic\, i.e. the next step in the trajectory of each bear is modelled as an event with multiple outcomes\, the probability of each outcome is influenced by the Brown Bear Habitat Suitability Index. \n

SUMMARY:SWC Research @Semantics 2024
DESCRIPTION:Investigate the Impact of Contextual Information on LLMs for Taxonomy Expansion\nPresenter: Artem Revenko\nTime: Sept 18th\, Room 10\, 13:00-13:30 \nThis paper presents an exploratory study that investigates the use of various Large Language Models (LLMs) for the task of taxonomy expansion. \nOur objective is to enhance the taxonomical structure by querying LLMs for (1) child taxons and (2) alternative labels of existing taxons. Beginning with an incomplete taxonomy\, we explore the most effective ways to prompt LLMs exploiting explicit and shared knowledge captured in manually curated taxonomies to provide context for the task at hand. We experiment with different prompting templates\, well-recognized taxonomies (EuroVoc\, STW\, UNESCO)\, and popular language models (Claude\, Claude3\, Llama2). \nOur results suggest feasibility of solving of the proposed task with the modern LLMs and human oversight. Moreover\, we observe certain patterns and trends in the performance of the models\, noting that it was not possible to identify a single best configuration that would fit all models. \n

SUMMARY:DataBri-X Webinar: Siemens pilot to demonstrate the capabilities of the DataBrix-X toolbox for the Energy Data Spaces
DESCRIPTION:DataBri-X | Siemens pilot to demonstrate the capabilities of the DataBrix-X toolbox for the Energy Data Spaces\n  \n  \nSiemens AG is a technology company focused on industry\, infrastructure\, transport\, and healthcare. From more resource-efficient factories\, resilient supply chains\, and smarter buildings and grids\, to cleaner and more comfortable transportation as well as advanced healthcare\, the company creates technology with the purpose of adding real value for customers. By combining the real and the digital worlds\, Siemens empowers its customers to transform their industries and markets\, helping them to transform everyday life for billions of people. Within DataBri-X Siemens is leading the “renewable energy communities use case”. \nThe Clean energy for all Europeans packages sets the framework for “renewable energy communities”. Energy communities organize collective and citizen-driven energy actions that will help pave the way for a clean energy transition\, while moving citizens to the fore. They contribute to increased public acceptance of renewable energy projects and make it easier to attract private investments in the clean energy transition. At the same time\, they have the potential to provide direct benefits to citizens by advancing energy efficiency and lowering their electricity bills. \nThe economic feasibility of an EC depends on its participants as well as the intended goal of the EC. Simulations pose a valuable tool in the design and validation of energy communities. However\, such simulations are challenging given the large heterogeneity\, not only of the actors in the community\, but also of the data\, both in terms of data type and quality. This calls for data management tools that can deal with multiple data descriptions and provide tools for accessing and managing data quality\, all while ensuring that privacy and security requirements are met. \nThe webinar will introduce the DataBri-X project\, as well as Konrad Diwold and Josiane Xavier Parreira will present the energy use case of the project. \nAgenda: \n\nIntroduction to the Energy Data Spaces pilot presenting by Siemens as a part of DataBri-X project “HORIZON-CL4-2021-DATA-01”\nEnergy communities\, a tool for the European energy transition\nTools for simulating and evaluating energy communities.\nOverview of the DataBri-X energy community pilot

SUMMARY:DataBri-X Webinar: Wolters Kluwer pilot to demonstrate the capabilities of the DataBrix-X toolbox for the Legal Data Spaces
DESCRIPTION:DataBri-X | Wolters Kluwer pilot to demonstrate the capabilities of the DataBrix-X toolbox for the Legal Data Spaces\n\n\n\n\nWolters Kluwer is a global provider of specialist information\, software and services for lawyers\, tax advisors and auditors\, clinicians and nursing staff as well as for finance\, auditing\, regulatory and compliance. Wolters Kluwer Germany as the DataBri-X project partner aims at making the DataBri-X approach a success in the legal domain. \nOn the one hand\, legal information and procedures are more and more influencing and even determining business and societal conduct in digital Europe – so being able to create value from data usage is a legal question. On the other hand\, society is expecting more transparency and explainability for technology and AI – and legal information is an important enabler for achieving this transparency (e.g.\, GDPR or data ethics). By publishing and advocating legal information from different countries\, unified by a single core semantic model\, systematic comparisons and analytics of legal systems and practices across Europe are possible for the first time. This leads to more transparency and justice for administrations and citizens and supports creating sustainable business across borders and jurisdictions. \nThe Wolters Kluwer pilot aims to serve as a nucleus for a European Legal Data Space. It will provide platform technology and specific workflows for processing legal information to address real world legal problems. In addition\, the use case contributes to the vivid discussion on legal challenges in the light of Data Spaces in general as well as on consequences from implementing AI applications on top. \nAnother goal of the WKD platform is to expand to at least 5 countries in 4 languages\, with an energy footprint reduced by 40% compared to what would be achieved without deployment of the DataBri-X toolbox. \nChristian Dirschl and Anke Losch will introduce the DataBri-X project and then present the legal use case and ask all participants for their support in the future work of the use case. \n\n\n\nMore Infos: https://internationaldataspaces.org/events/databri-x-wolters-kluwer-pilot-to-demonstrate-the-capabilities-of-the-databrix-x-toolbox-for-the-legal-data-spaces//

DESCRIPTION:Combining Semantic Web and Machine Learningfor Auditable Legal Key Element Extraction\nPresenter: Anna Breit\nTime: May 31st\, Session 3A: KGs and ML\, 14:30-15:30 \n\n\n\nBased on a real world use case\, we developed and evaluated a hybrid AI system that aims to extract key elements from legal permits by combining methods from the Semantic Web and Machine Learning. Specifically\, we modelled the available background knowledge in a custom Knowledge Graph\, which we exploited together with the usage of different language- and text-embedding-models in order to extract different information from official Austrian permits\, including the Issuing Authority\, the Operator of the facility in question\, the Reference Number\, and the Issuing Date. Additionally\, we implemented mechanisms to capture automatically auditable traces of the system to ensure the transparency of the processes. Our quantitative evaluation showed overall promising results\, while the in-depth qualitative analysis revealed concrete error types\, providing guidance on how to improve the current prototype.

DESCRIPTION:Taxonomy-enhanced Document Retrieval with Dense Representations\nAuthors: Victor Mireles\, Artem Revenko\, Ioanna Lytra\, Anna Breit\, Julia Klezl \nPresenter: Artem Revenko \nTime: 2.5.2023 11:30am \n\n\n\nDocument retrieval is a task that powers several downstream applications such as search and question answering. One way to approach this task is to take embeddings of the documents to be retrieved\, and of the query\, and use a similarity function to rank results. In this work\, we extend this approach by incorporating knowledge about entities mentioned in either the document or the  query\, in the form of taxonomic relations and canonical labels of said entities. The method\, when applied to a domain-specific corpus\, improves retrieval recall over a state of the art method trained on a general domain corpus. It does so without requiring any further retraining of the machine learning models involved\, thus making it applicable for use cases where training is not feasible because of data or infrastructure limitations.\n\n\n\n\nExploratory Analysis of the Applicability of Formalised Knowledge to Personal Experience Narration\n\nAuthors: Victor Mireles\, Stephanie Billib\, Artem Revenko\, Stefan Jänicke\, Frank Uiterwaal\, Pavel Pecina \nPresenter: Victor Mireles \nTime: 3.5.2023 12:00pm \n\n\nSome of the victims of Nazi prosecution have consigned their personal experiences in the form of diaries of their internment in concentration camps. Such human-centric texts may contrast with the organisation of knowledge about such events that\, for example\, historians and archivists make. In this work\, we analyse six such narrations with the use of Entity Extraction and Named Entity Recognition techniques\, present the results of the corresponding exploration\, and discuss the suitability of such tools on this corpus. We show that knowledge tools\, that have been successfully used to organise documents\, can be lacking when describing personal accounts\, and we suggest ways to alleviate this.

SUMMARY:SWC Research @Semantics 2022
DESCRIPTION:Applying Semantic AI platforms for Augmented Intelligence\nPresenter: Robert David\, Patrice Neff\nWednesday\, September 14\, 2022 – 10:30 to 12:00 \n\n\n\nIn recent years\, augmented intelligence systems have advanced to provide humans with insights for knowledge discovery and decision making. Using a cooperative approach\, these systems use powerful artificial intelligence (AI) to augment human cognitive activities. To do so\, the AI capabilities have to complement human actions and therefore be explainable and controllable\, while still providing implicit insights based on statistical models. Semantic Artificial Intelligence (Semantic AI)\, as the combination of machine learning and knowledge models\, provides such a methodology. \nPoster: Proposal for PORQUE\, a Polylingual Hybrid Question Answering System\nPresenter: Anna Breit\nWednesday\, September 14\, 2022 – 17:45 to 18:30 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSemi-automated Generation of Multilingual Domain-specific Taxonomies\nPresenter: Martin Kaltenböck\, Ilan Kernermann\nThursday\, September 15\, 2022 – 10:15 to 11:15 \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe use of and need for domain-specific taxonomies are rapidly augmenting\, as part of the growing interest in multilingual knowledge management. However\, creating a fine taxonomy for any domain or industry use case can require many months of intensive expert work. To face this challenge\, we converge human created and curated data with automated processes and a Knowledge Graph tool. Namely\, we apply cross-lingual lexicographic content from KD-Lexicala with Semantic Web Company’s PoolParty Semantic Suite to generate multilingual domain-specific taxonomies. \n\nLearning ontology classes from text by clustering lexical substitutes derived from language models\nPresenter: Anna Breit\nThursday\, September 15\, 2022 – 15:00 to 16:00\n \n\n\n\nMany tools for knowledge management and the Semantic Web presuppose the existence of an arrangement of instances into classes\, i. e. an ontology. Creating such an ontology\, however\, is a labor-intensive task. In this paper\, we present an unsupervised method to learn an ontology from text. We rely on pre-trained language models to generate lexical substitutes of given entities and then use matrix factorization to induce new classes and their entities.

We investigate an approach to produce fine-grained named entity annotations from a small training dataset to later apply it on a large corpus of Austrian court decisions. We apply general purpose Named Entity Recognition model to produce annotations of common coarse-grained types. Next\, a small sample of these annotations are manually annotated by domain experts to produce initial fine-grained training datset.

SUMMARY:Talk @EACL 2021
DESCRIPTION:WiC-TSV: An Evaluation Benchmark for Target Sense Verification of Words in Context\nPresenter: Anna Breit \nAbstract: We present WiC-TSV\, a new multi-domain evaluation benchmark for Word Sense Disambiguation. More specifically\, we introduce a framework for Target Sense Verification of Words in Context which grounds its uniqueness in the formulation as binary classification task thus being independent of external sense inventories\, and the coverage of various domains. This makes the dataset highly flexible for the evaluation of a diverse set of models and systems in and across domains. WiC-TSV provides three different evaluation settings\, depending on the input signals provided to the model. We set baseline performance on the dataset using state-of-the-art language models. Experimental results show that even though these models can perform decently on the task\, there remains a gap between machine and human performance\, especially in out-of-domain settings. WiC-TSV data is available at https://competitions.codalab.org/competitions/23683.

SUMMARY:Invited Talk @Winter School of KnowGraphs
DESCRIPTION:Application talk: PoolParty Semantic Suite and Knowledge Graph Management\nPresenter: Martin Kaltenböck and Artem Revenko \nAbstract: The amount of structured\, semi-structured and unstructured data in organisations is growing heavily and data and information is often stored in silos inside of department solutions\, but organisations are interested in unified 360 degree views on their data and information to be able to make precise and sustainable decisions. Enterprise Knowledge Graphs can solve this problem by integrating data and information from heterogeneous sources in different formats by mapping it to one or more central knowledge models and linking it to each other in the form of a Knowledge Graph. This talk will provide a short introduction into the problem statement and why and how Knowledge Graphs can help\, furthermore it gives a short introduction into PoolParty Semantic Suite\, a Semantic Middleware for powerful Knowledge Graph applications and finally it will provide an overview of the most important use cases that Enterprise Knowledge Graphs can solve.
