Big Data Europe: Fuelling Big Data with Semantics
Fueling Big Data with Semantics
The Big Data Europe project is a large-scale initiative to bring Big Data technologies to the next level by improving current challenges such as performance issues and data quality. The enhancement of existing methods and tools is driven by the development of application prototypes in various fields of the 7 Societal Challenges of the European Commission H2020 programme as healthcare, clean renewable energies, transportation or IT security.
“The big data technology and services market is growing at an annual growth rate of 23.1% over the 2014-2019 forecast period with annual spending reaching $48.6 billion in 2019.
— IDC (2015)
What Is the Ultimate Goal of the Research Project?
The project consortium is developing a Big Data Integrator based on existing Big Data components (mainly Apache). Based on that, it will develop Big Data application prototypes in industries that can provide large data-sets and have an urgent need to progress towards more data-driven solution approaches. However, the Big Data technology landscape is highly fragmented and reveals a multitude of technical challenges. Data volume, velocity and variety need to be tackled in various ways depending on the use case. Only when Big Data gets semantically enriched, it becomes valuable at an application level. By assembling and extending available Big Data methods and tools for the defined use cases, a robust Big Data architecture blueprint shall be established. Other market players shall benefit from the implementation learnings and improved technologies in future and be encouraged to start their Big Data projects in an early phase.
Why Is Cooperation so Important for This Project?
Many industries and academic institutions are currently evaluating or already started to work on Big Data projects and experience the same technology limitations and challenges around data management. The interdisciplinary research consortium of Big Data Europe is strongly dedicated to an intense knowledge transfer across disciplines. Thus they make sure that the available expertise effectively enhances the usage of Big Data technologies.
Further Developments at Semantic Web Company
Semantic technologies are predisposed to provide a semantic layer and thereby additional meaning and context to Big Data repositories. Shaping the Big Data architecture blueprint allows us to gain valuable insights for our future PoolParty product development. Our business unit Semantic Data Management is extending its understanding around Big Data integrations and can professionally consult across technology domains.
